4. Embedding Feature: Clinical Coaching

What is Clinical Coaching?
Clinical Coaching is a service feature offered to schools, programs, agencies, and communities who are embedding IMPACT across their community.
Clinical Coaching provides a reflective, capacity-building process designed to empower individuals, families, and teams to move forward when they feel:
- Stuck or unsure what to do next.
- Uncertain about direction or priorities.
- Seeking clarity, validation, or confidence in their approach.
Intent
Each 60-120 minute Clinical Coaching session is co-designed with the individual or team. The focus can be directed toward:
- Themselves (personal or professional growth).
- Someone they are supporting.
- A complex challenge or situation they are navigating.
Through guided, side-by-side conversations, participants work collaboratively with the IMPACT Clinical Coach to co-create a practical Growth Action Plan (also known as a What-What-How® Plan). This plan builds:
- Shared and deep awareness of what is happening (including context and under the surface).
- Clarity around what is important to focus on moving forward.
- Specific “how” strategies to achieve growth outcomes.
Outcome
The coaching session is a practical and empowering process where participants:
- Feel seen, validated, and supported.
- Strengthen their capacity for reflection and problem-solving.
- Gain confidence and intentionality in their actions.
- Leave with a clear, actionable What-What-How Plan that can be applied across personal, professional, or community contexts.
Delivery
Clinical Coaching is delivered by LBI accredited IMPACT Clinical Coaches. They are tertiary qualified and skilled practitioners who combine professional clinical knowledge with the IMPACT framework and content.
Each coach is trained to integrate their expertise with the lived wisdom of individuals and communities, ensuring that all plans are collaborative, empowering, and tailored to the unique context of each session.
Clinical Coaching is grounded in seven guiding principles that ensure the process is both supportive and transformative:
- Empowering and Side-by-Side: The coach and participant work in partnership, drawing equally on lived experience and professional insight.
- Co-Design: Plans and priorities are developed collaboratively, ensuring ownership and shared understanding.
- Capacity Building: Sessions strengthen participants’ ability to address challenges independently using What–What–How thinking.
- Client Directed: The content and focus of each session are led by the participant’s needs and goals.
- Positive and Hopeful: A growth mindset and strengths-based approach guide every interaction.
- Gentle Challenging: Coaches respectfully question and expand thinking without threatening participants’ worldview.
- Solution Focused: Conversations conclude with clear, actionable next steps that promote growth outcomes.
Professional Standards
LBI Clinical Coaches uphold the highest standards of ethical and professional conduct. They maintain confidentiality, operate within their scope of practice, and prioritise participant safety and wellbeing. Sessions are not substitutes for formal therapy, and if significant risk factors arise—such as indicators of self-harm or safety concerns—the coach activates appropriate risk management protocols.
LBI Clinical Coaches are supervised by Dr Ivan Raymond. Feedback or concerns of coaching delivery should be provided to Ivan at ivan.raymond@lbi.org.au.
